In the Land of the Maharajahs
Like an open gateway into a fascinating world, the city of Jaipur leads into the historic and legendary ‘Land of the Maharajahs’, Rajasthan. Although the city has a golden past, it has adjusted well to contemporary times and has been spared the bloodshed and military struggles that have been encountered in most other cities in Rajasthan. The old part of town has remained almost completely unchanged since it was built in 1727. The water palace of Jal Mahal on Lake Mansagar, just outside Jaipur, dates back to the 18th century and was used by the maharajas as a hunting residence. Surrounded by a magnificent garden, according to Mughal design, the Jai Mahal Palace Hotel has the unique atmosphere of an historic residence. Built in 1745, it was the residence of the former prime minister of Jaipur and today, enchants visitors from all over the world with its nostalgic charm and unique atmosphere. Located around 40 kilometres northwest of Jaipur is one of the most remote and captivating buildings in Rajasthan, the Samode Palace. In 1987, the palace was transformed into a splendid hotel and each year since then, it has been voted as the finest and most luxurious hotel in India. Like most other cities in Shekhavati, Mandawa was originally a small village but due to the construction of a fortress and a city wall in 1765, the town developed into an important commercial settlement. Today, Mandawa is well known for its medieval atmosphere and exceptionally well preserved buildings and …
The Lakes of the Great Rift Valley
The Great Rift Valley is part of a huge geological fault in East Africa. This fascinating deep scar in the Earth’s crust that divides Kenya in a north-south direction, extends for 9000 kilometres within a wild and seemingly endless landscape. The fault is particularly famous for its soda, alkaline and freshwater lakes, such as Lake Naivasha that is located 100 kilometres from Nairobi. As with many other lakes in the Great Rift Valley, with more than 400 bird species, Lake Naivasha is a true paradise among ornithologists. The tranquility of the lake can be quite deceptive and the Massai name of the lake, Enaiposha, meaning ‘back and forth’, is an indication of how turbulent Naivasha can sometimes be. A friendly welcome awaits visitors to Crescent Island, at the southern end of Lake Naivasha. This idyllic island is located on the edge of a submerged volcanic crater and as there are no dangerous animals on the island, it can be explored at leisure. Lake Nakuru’s main attraction is its flamingo population. Up to 2 million of these birds once lived here and even today, they have transformed the lake into a mass of dazzling color. Cormorants, heron and pelican are among the most important birds on Lake Nakuru. They each survive on fish, of which the lake has an abundant supply. Located below the 600 metre high Laikipia Escarpment, Lake Bogoria is the most spectacular lake in the Great Rift Valley. As with most lakes in this region, Lake Bogoria is alkaline due to its lack of …

In the Land of the Pharaos
The Pyramids of Giza are undoubtedly one of the most impressive and famous historic sites of ancient Egypt, ‘The Land of the Pharaohs’, a land whose treasures are still, more than 4000 years after their construction, remarkable. A total of 2.3 million stone blocks form the largest pyramid, the Cheops, that was built around 2560 BC on an elevated plateau, on the edge of the western desert. The huge contours of the pyramids of Giza still dominate Cairo’s surrounding landscape. Their dimensions symbolize timeless power and in red shining colors, the sky announces the fall of dusk and highlights the dramatic, magical beauty of these monuments. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser rises up almost 70 meters above the ground and it was the world’s first monumental stone building. Thus, the Step Pyramid is often referred to as the ‘Mother of All Pyramids’. A narrow maze-like corridor leads from the outside world into the dark depths of the pyramid and the Pharaoh’s tomb. The flowering period of Thebes began in the Middle Empire when it became the new capital and lasted up until around the 14th century BC when Memphis regained its importance and influence. Today, Thebes is closely connected with this town of death along the western shore of the Nile and the legendary’Valley of the Kings’. In 1922, the discovery of the royal tomb of Tutankhamen by British archaeologist, Howard Carter, was particularly important. After five years of excavation, the scientists were successful and the …
